I’m Sorry, What…

…the f*ck is going on?!

It’s been a little minute; I’m sorry y’all. Did you miss me? I missed y’all. Deeply. Between work and actual life, I have not been able to come up for air and give my all to a post like I would’ve wanted to. Thank God for a relatively quiet and dreary Saturday. Needed it.

I have, however, been staying relatively up to date on all the craziness that seems to now be happening nonstop. Friendly reminder, friends: You are not a cake. This is actually real life and issalot. Lucky for you, I’m here to break it all down. Here’s a dump of all the shit that’s blown my mind over the last couple weeks (in no particular order):

  1. Kanye – This man really fixed his lips to say that Harriet Tubman ‘never actually freed the slaves’ and I — just can’t. I can rap and sing All Falls Down from top to bottom and will still be the first to tell you that this man should not be on anyone’s ballot and truthfully just needs prayer. Do not let what you love about his musical prowess trick you into believing that ignorance and Bipolar are synonymous. They are not.
  2. Megan thee Stallion – At this point, I actually really don’t know the ins and outs of this story, and I’m not sure we ever will. What we have been told is that Megan was shot in both feet (by Tory Lanez???) and had to get the bullets surgically removed. If you know me, you know I love me some Meg. She seems like she just likes to shake her ass and have a good time. That’s my kind of energy, so I was really sad to see this. But I was even more sad to see the reactions, memes and commentary that came out of it. I know Black folks will always find a way to laugh, but there were more jokes than concern for me. From my perspective, what Malcolm X said still rings true: “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the black woman.” Full stop.
  3. Donald Trump – I don’t even want to spend too much time on y’all’s president because it is exhausting, but this man is a lunatic. There’s just no other way to put it. In just a couple weeks, he’s threatened to do a lot of things that are real questionable and unconstitutional and ionlikedet. The bottom line is: please vote this man out of office.
    • He’s finally admitted that coronavirus will get worse before it gets better (we knew)
    • He’s demanded that schools reopen but suggested that the election be postponed, in the same breath
    • He and his newly appointed Post Master General have undermined the postal service to negatively impact mail-in ballots
    • He sent federal forces to target protests in Portland
    • He’s tried to ban TikTok… (for why?)
  4. John Lewis – The Civil Rights leader and Congressman passed away on July 17 of pancreatic cancer. I suppose we shouldn’t have been terribly surprised, but I was still very sad to see him go (damn it, 2020!) Congressman Lewis lived a life driven by the fight for peace, racial justice and equity, and we owe it to him to keep pushing forward and getting into some #goodtrouble.
  5. Wayfair Child Trafficking? – This is very much so a conspiracy theory, but I believe it. I’m sorry, but I’m a where there’s smoke there’s fire ass bitch. I have yet to see an explantation for why furniture was being sold for tens of thousand of dollars above their actual retail price under the names of actual missing kids… If y’all have seen one, please share. I strongly believe that corporations and people in power have a hand in child trafficking, hence why it perpetuates and remains unchecked. This also leads me to…
  6. Jeffery Epstein & Ghislaine Maxwell – This is a real WTF. Between the politics, targeted deaths, and sex trafficking, the whole thing is giving me real B613 vibes. And that’s on Scandal.
  7. AOC Claps Back – So what’s really good with men thinking they can call women out of their name? WHO RAISED YOU?! After being called a “fucking bitch” by Representative Ted Bozo Yoho, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez kindly and eloquently read him for filth. No choice but to Stan. She honestly said it better than I ever could, so you just have to watch for yourself. We really need to have an honest conversation about teaching men to leave women alone, particularly when their egos are bruised.

Okay, so I know all of this sounds really negative BECAUSE IT IS! All of this is truly nothing but mess. I actually hate it here. In true Sonia fashion, though, I can’t leave y’all on a bad note. There have been some pleasant things:

  1. Kyrie Irving has pledged $1.5 million in support of WNBA players opting out of the season. The discrepancy in pay between NBA and WNBA is another story… but thanks, Kyrie.
  2. MacKenzie Scott donated $1.7 billion to HBCUs and other groups that are driving change. It’s no wonder her and Jeff Bezos didn’t work out – she actually has a heart. We appreciate you, girl.
  3. Netflix announced that 7 classic Black 90s & early 2000s sitcoms will be making a return on the streaming platform. I was BIG HYPE about this. I’ve been asking for Girlfriends since 2016 (I have receipts). I feel like I’ll have a different appreciation for it now. Don’t be surprised if you see a post or two about it.
  4. Beyonce dropped the BLACK IS KING Film. I haven’t seen it; I don’t have Disney+ (somebody drop their password), but what I’ve seen of it looks great! The visuals are stunning and you can always count on Queen Bey to come with the moves, a couple looks, and execute flawlessly. I can also appreciate her showcasing the African diaspora and supporting African musicians & artists. We been here and been lit, but welcome to the party, y’all!
  5. Oprah honors Breonna Taylor by featuring her on the September 2020 Issue of O: The Oprah Magazine. This is the first time in the magazine’s 20 year history that Oprah herself has not been on the cover. Breonna, we haven’t forgotten you, sis. #SayHerName
Breonna Taylor is on the cover of the September issue of O: The Oprah Magazine.

Well, y’all. I think this is it for now. Issalot, I told you. Despite it all, I’m trying to make space and time for me. I hope y’all find some time for you where you can. Always.
