This is a blog nearly 6 years in the making. Yes, years. I’m a Gemini; we don’t know how to finish shit (I literally have 4 unfinished books that I’ve been “reading”). Don’t @ me!
Almost 6 years ago, I graduated from the University of Virginia, packed up and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Yes, Utah… we’ll talk about that eventually. At the time, I thought a blog would be the perfect way to channel any struggles of being a young, Black professional woman living in a largely homogenous and conservative city, into forced exploration of the space that I was in and the people I was around. But life and excuses got in the way.
Almost 4 years ago, some friends, mentors and God helped me move to New York City. The Big Apple. Whew! If you’ve ever been to New York, you know it’s nothing but chaos. Needless to say, the blog was yet again put on the back-burner. My weekdays were filled with 11 hour long workdays and my weekends were spent forgetting the weekdays. And more excuses.
And then 2020 happened. No one asked for this year to be like this – no one… literally not a single soul, but here we are. Despite how unprecedented and difficult it has been thus far, I’ll take the small silver linings. COVID brought us some time and this reinvigorated #BlackLivesMatter movement brought some (much needed) focus on the Black experience.
Turns out it has been nearly 6 years and I still don’t have this shit figured out, and I’m still a young, Black professional woman navigating the space and time I’m in and the people I’m around. But what I’ve learned so far is the value of Black lived experiences being shared by Black voices. So, welcome! I’m happy to have you. Sit down, stay a while.
I can hear you saying all of this out loud; the words speak off the page so authentically. Love this blog idea….sorry if I become a creepy fan.
